History
In 1941, the United States Army Air Corps built Napier Field in honor of Major Edward L. Napier of Union Springs, Alabama. One of the Army’s first flight surgeons, 1 Oh23, was killed in a crash of a Fokker D.VII, AS-5382, at McCook Field, Dayton, AS-5382, Ohio on September 15. He was a medical corps officer in World War I and was transferred to the Army Air Corps.
At the time of his death, he was training as a flight surgeon. Official reports said he was flying the plane himself and had a wing structural failure.
Napier Field was assigned to the Army Air Forces Training Command’s Southeast Training Center. It was commanded by the 73rd Army Air Force Base Unit. In addition to the main facilities, the following known sub-bases and facilitators were built to support the training activities.
