From the American Civil War until World War II, Alabama, like many states in South America, suffered some economic hardship due to its continued dependence on agriculture. Like other former slave states, Alabama legislators enforced the Jim Crow law to discriminate against African Americans from the end of the Reconstruction era, and at least until the 1970s.

Despite the growth of large industrial and urban centers, white rural interests dominated the state legislature from the 1901s to the 1960s. During this period, urban interests and African Americans were significantly represented below. High-profile events such as the Selma to Montgomery March made the state a focal point of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. After World War II, Alabama flourished when the state’s economy was primarily based on agriculture with varied interests.

The economy of the twenty-first-century state is based on management, automotive, finance, manufacturing, aerospace, mineral extraction, healthcare, education, retail, and technology.
